Gwyn Petty
I was appointed to the Governing Body of St John’s School in 1988 and have devoted much of my time to the school as a part-time teacher, coach and Rugby referee and assessor for the GCSE Art examinations.
All of my life has been spent in education – on leaving Trinity College, I taught in a primary school in Essex, then as an instructor in the Royal Army Educational Corps, with responsibility for the needs of troops of all ages – from young band boys to senior non-commissioned officers. While in the service I obtained another qualification from the Army School of Education, and later, from the College of Preceptors and the Open University. On leaving the Army I taught at secondary level in the London Borough of Ealing, in posts of increasing responsibility, until my early retirement in 1986.
My interest in educational matters continued after retirement when I was invited to work as an Inspector of Examinations for University of London, A.E.B. and O.C. Boards, all of which gave me access to many schools and colleges, state and independent, all over Wales and the Borders. This broadened my knowledge of how good educational establishments work and I am thankful to be able to put that experience to good use for the benefit of St John’s.
