Friends of St John's School Chairmans ReportAGM September 2007September 2006-September 2007 has proved to be yet another busy year for the ‘Friends’.At the start of the new academic year, a Coffee Morning for parents was held in the dining room. This again proved very popular being a simple but valuable event in supporting new and old parents. Again we held another Quiz Night. Thanks to Dr Jones who agreed to be the Quiz Master we raised £116 The Children’s Disco on 20th October proved to be a great success for the children raising a profit of £75. The pre-prep nativity raffle raised £243 that went towards providing a Christmas party for the children. The Christmas Ball this year was a change of venue to the ‘Heronstone Hotel’ where bed & breakfast was offered at a reasonable rate. Thanks go to Catherine Perkins for organising this event that was so successful socially and financially. The atmosphere was particularly good and we raised a profit of £3,217 thanks to all those who contributed and/or attended. The Christmas Bazaar continues to be very successful for the pupils (& mum’s) Many thanks to all those who donated quality items for us to sale. Thanks to all those involved especially ‘Father Christmas’ who gave of his time at this very busy time of the year. We made a profit of £992. In February it was of course the Valentines Day Disco and thoroughly enjoyed by the children. Although this event is never financially very profitable this year it raised £29. The Clothes Show raffle raised £129 and all the children performed well. The pre-prep Easter Egg Hunt was another “fun” event for the pupil’s in March; this was financed by the Friends at the cost of £102. The Family Barn Dance/Duck Race was held for its third year – co-ordinated by Catherine Perkins and held on 12th May. This was a great family occasion with lots of fun, food and dancing. Catherine again worked extremely hard. A profit of £817 was made. On the 25th May the Friends held their third ‘Teddy Bears’ Picnic. Thanks go to all those parents who contributed by donating the large variety of food with a profit of £65. A special thanks again goes to the ‘Video Club’ team who continue week after week providing a valuable service on a Friday afternoon. Helpers are required to provide this valuable service so if you can help or wish to be considered as part of a rota please speak to Patricia Rock or Catherine - you will be most welcome! Last year a profit of £545 was made. Again the Friends were formally invited to the School Open Evening. This gave some of us the opportunity to support the teaching staff and circulate/talk to existing and prospective parents and visitors. Many thanks to Catherine Perkins who organised the Sports Day raffle a profit of £156 was made. The Summer B.B.Q. was cancelled at the end of the summer term due to very poor weather but took place on the first Saturday of the new term in September 2007. This again was a successful event not only because of the sum of money raised (£1,500) but also the pleasant weather and friendly atmosphere. Thanks to all those who donated items and gave of their time. It was a good informal event especially for all new pupils & parents to the school. The total profit this year was £6,485 well done everyone! A Special Thanks to Ruth Cooke (vice-chair), Catherine Perkins (Treasurer) and Sue Brown (Minute Secretary), for their continued support and efforts. Again I would encourage as many parents, grandparents, friends and other family members to be involved in the work of the ‘Friends’ however great or small. It is a very practical way of supporting the life of the school. All efforts really do benefit your children and ALL profits go back into the school. If you have any ideas please come and share them with us. Come on and join in the fun! Thank You! JENNY SANDERS Chair of the Friends
