On Friday 12th March a group of 5 Year 10s and 5 Year 9s attended a military challenge at Margam Park, to compete against other schools. The challenges were difficult and required a lot of concentration. Challenges included using rope, barrels, poles etc to move equipment (and the team) across ‘swamps and snowfields’. There was also a quiz and maths questions. We found it hard work but fun, and it improved our teamwork skills. We came 8th, but we all enjoyed the experience.

On Thursday 11th March Years 2 and 3 visited St. Fagans. They had great fun being time detectives and finding out about the lives of children from the past. Year 2 were amazed that children in Tudor times often didn’t know when their birthdays were!

A massive congratulations to all pupils who participated in this year’s Eisteddfod. The day was packed with a wide variety of recitations, sketches, musical items and many more. The keenly contested house choir competition was won by the Saxons but the overall winners of the Hurlow Rose Bowl were the Britons. A big thank you goes to all the judges who adjudicated all of our competitions on the day and also to the parents who participated in our Eisteddfod highlights concert! Please see overleaf for a list of all the competition winners.

“Any horizontal Irish? Or a vertical German?” Quickly – I need horizontal and vertical Turkeys!” Such was the intriguing conversation during many January lunchtimes in St.John’s. Alongside baking Welsh cakes, burnishing banners and display boards and rehearsing for a special Comenius concert, several pupils from our newly established Comenius Club devoted their spare time to cutting and pasting flags from our partner countries, to put around the edges of all the displays.

Our sporting tradition was celebrated with a visit from past pupil and former captain of the school’s football team, Mr John Rosser, of Cowbridge. Mr Rosser attended St John’s in the 1950s and presented the school with a framed photograph of the 1957 football team.
In that year Mr Rosser also won the coveted Victor Ludorum cup (winner of the school sports day competition) and current football captain and 2009 Victor Ludorum, Tom Brown, received the photograph on behalf of the school. Mr Rosser also told the pupils about another member of the school’s 1957 football team, former England test cricketer Graham Roope. We have a thriving Alumni network and still maintain regular contact with several members who attended St John’s in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. We are always delighted to be visited by past pupils of any age and to hear about their fond memories of their time at the school
