Visit from St. Gilles School, Nantes

Posted on March 29, 2010 by admin

It was with great pleasure that we recently welcomed our partner school in France for their third visit to St. John’s. A full day’s programme began with a welcoming assembly in the Crampton Hall , and after this the staff and pupils of St. Gilles joined senior pupils in their classes.

Later in the morning our guests went on a tour of the village which included a visit to St. John’s church and an interesting talk by Mr. Gwyn Petty.

Visit by the Fire Service

Posted on March 19, 2010 by admin

The Pre Prep had a wonderful time when Porthcawl Fire Brigade came to talk to us about how to keep safe. The fireman told us a story about a little girl called Tanni who found matches and caused a fire in her bedroom.

Some of us could try on the fireman’s helmet, boots, leggings, jacket and gloves. Now Parents, the exciting bit is about to be heard! We all went outside to the fire engine and got to sit on the driver’s seat and put on the siren. We also had a go at squirting water from the hose and hitting a target. You might be shocked because the seniors were looking out of their classroom windows— getting a bit jealous because they did not get a turn!

Military Challenge

Posted on March 13, 2010 by admin

On Friday 12th March a group of 5 Year 10s and 5 Year 9s attended a military challenge at Margam Park, to compete against other schools. The challenges were difficult and required a lot of concentration. Challenges included using rope, barrels, poles etc to move equipment (and the team) across ‘swamps and snowfields’. There was also a quiz and maths questions. We found it hard work but fun, and it improved our teamwork skills. We came 8th, but we all enjoyed the experience.
